About AMI

AMI was launched in 2023 by the Max Kohler Foundation and the game design studio FableVision to give museum professionals in Switzerland and the US the opportunity to experiment with playful and more wide-reaching museum programs.

8 museums, 20 prototypes, 30 day sprints: this hefty initial goal of Project AMI was to escape the museum "perfection loop" by working across departments, institutions and cultures, and exploring prototyping, iteration, testing and a phased approach to creating products and programs. The resulting AMI prototypes are intentionally low barrier to entry, adaptable, and designed to be shared as open-source starting points that other museums can adopt and remix. Each has been tested and adapted through public PlayTests and professional show-and-tell sessions at our partner museums.

Today, Project AMI is a large community and an innovative hub to share open-source interactives and a framework for any partner museum to shorten their timeline and reduce their costs by using existing resources and designs. In a world of scarce museum budgets, building on an AMI prototype can significantly reduce development time for any museum team, and gives museum professionals the support and experience of the AMI community professionals who can share what has worked and not worked already.

Together, we proved that we can build pathways towards local and international museum collaboration. We signaled to our visitors and to each other that we’re willing to experiment, try new ideas, and play. Together we can build a museum community that's open and flexible in how we build and share our work for public engagement because a community begins with friends - AMIs in fact.

Five Principles of AMI

Audience-focused

AMI is dedicated to creating meaningful interactions with art and culture. We harness the expertise of our community to build a growing community of art enthusiasts.

Shifting Mindsets

AMI values the transformative power of stepping beyond the ordinary as it fosters fresh perspectives and detects talents. We therefore encourage collaboration across institutions, professions, communities and cultures, mobilizing expertise that often goes untapped within existing structures.

Community of Action

AMI focuses on tangible results rather than abstract concepts. We prioritize experimentation over perfection, enabling better, scalable outcomes, efficient resource use, and deeper connections with diverse visitor communities. We encourage individuals to recognize, develop, and rely on their own resources, as well as those within the AMI community.

Radical Sharing

We are committed to openly sharing resources and ideas. AMI products are inherently open source. We encourage others to embrace this movement. To uphold this spirit, our community is built on trust, kindness, and commitment to empowering one another. Whether individuals or institutions, we meet as equals and ensuring every voice is heard.

Playfulness

We overcome barriers between ourselves and external communities through positivity. Everyone is invited to contribute. Through playful, heartfelt actions, we create spaces that make engagement with art and culture accessible and enriching.
